About Dana Barton, LMSW, ACSW

Dana Barton, LMSW, ACSW is a psychotherapist specializing in individual, couples and family therapy and maintains a private practice in downtown Ann Arbor, MI.

With over 29 years experience, and as a graduate of University of Michigan School of Social Work specializing in Interpersonal Practice, she is currently serving as a private practitioner working with a broad spectrum of clients. Among her areas of expertise are: treatment for depression, anxiety, adult survivors of childhood physical, emotional and sexual abuse, sexual orientation and gender identity concerns, relationship difficulties including sex therapy, stressful life transitions, and grief and loss.

In the fall of 2011, Ms. Barton completed a post masters degree certificate in Sexual Health and Sex Therapy from the University of Michigan.

She is an interactive, solution-focused therapist. Her therapeutic approach is to provide support and practical feedback to assist clients in effectively addressing personal life challenges. Her theoretical orientation is largely informed by family systems and psychodynamic theories.  She offers a highly personalized approach to treatment which is individually tailored to meet the needs of each client. With compassion and understanding, she works with each individual to identify and build on their strengths to achieve the personal growth they are committed to accomplishing.

Dana received a bachelor's degree in Speech, Communications and Drama from Manchester College, North Manchester, Indiana in 1974, and a M.A. in Theatre from University of Michigan in 1977.  After ten years working as a professional actress in New York and regional theatre, she returned to Ann Arbor and received an Masters of Social Work from University of Michigan School of Social Work in 1988.  She was pleased to serve as an adjunct faculty member for UMSSW for ten years teaching courses: Introduction to Interpersonal Practice, Human Development: A Life Cycle Approach, and Foundation Skills in Social Work Practice. She also enjoyed supervising graduate students while in their professional practicums.  She continues to provide clinical supervision for recent MSW grads as they prepare for state licensure.

Dana Barton is a licensed Masters of Social Work (LMSW) by the State of Michigan and is a member of the Academy of Certified Social Workers (ACSW.)

She has been a member of the National Association of Social Workers since 1988.
